Louisiana Contractor License Bond Requirements
What Louisiana requires, what it costs, and how to get bonded
The short answer for Louisiana
No. Louisiana does not require a contractor license bond at all. What the statute actually offers a contractor who cannot document the required net worth is an irrevocable letter of credit, which is a bank instrument, not a surety bond.
Does Louisiana require a contractor license bond?
No. Louisiana licenses contractors statewide across eleven major classifications, including building construction, highway and bridge, heavy construction, municipal and public works, electrical, mechanical, plumbing, hazardous materials, residential construction, mold remediation, and home improvement.
Why nearly every other page on this topic is wrong
Search for a Louisiana contractor license bond and you will be told you can post one in the amount of the net worth requirement plus any negative net worth. That sentence is a misreading of the statute. R.S. 37:2156.1(B)(2) offers an irrevocable letter of credit in that amount, not a surety bond. The distinction is not academic. A letter of credit is issued by your bank and it ties up your borrowing capacity, which is the same capacity you need for payroll and mobilisation. A surety bond does not touch your bank line. If you have been shopping for a Louisiana license bond, you have been shopping for a product the state does not ask for.
What Louisiana requires instead
Here is what Louisiana actually requires, from the statute:
- A financial statement on a board form, current within twelve months, prepared and signed by an accountant, bookkeeper or CPA and signed by you attesting it is true and correct. A CPA-prepared statement may be attached in place of a CPA signature on the board form.
- A net worth minimum tied to your license category. See the note below - the statute and the Board's own brochure currently disagree on the figure, so confirm yours with the Board before you rely on it.
- An irrevocable letter of credit if you fall short, in the amount of the net worth requirement plus the amount of any negative net worth.
- General liability of $100,000 plus workers compensation for residential construction and its subclassifications, mold remediation, and home improvement. A liability trust fund under R.S. 22:46(9)(d) at the same $100,000 is an accepted alternative.
- A background investigation of the applicant, each principal and each designated qualifying party, covering bankruptcy, judgments, insolvency, liens and any criminal conviction or plea.
- A designated qualifying party for each classification and for the Louisiana business and law requirement.
One figure we will not guess at
The net worth minimum is genuinely unsettled between two sources that both carry weight. R.S. 37:2156.1(B)(2), as published current to January 2023, sets $50,000 for residential and commercial licenses and their subclassifications and specialties, and $25,000 for home improvement, mold remediation and labor-only. The LSLBC's own licensing brochure, published August 2025, states $10,000 for every category. We are not going to print one and hope. Call the Board at 225.765.2301 and confirm the figure for your classification, or call us and we will confirm it with them for you.
When you need a Louisiana license at all
| License or registration | Project value that triggers it | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Commercial license | $50,000 or more | Any construction project except residential structures with no more than four attached dwelling units. |
| Residential license | $50,000 or more, or any structural work | Residential swimming pool work needs that specialty classification once it exceeds $7,500 including labor and materials. |
| Home improvement registration | Over $7,500 up to $50,000 | Above $50,000 you need the residential license instead. |
| Mold remediation license | $7,500 or more | Also requires 24 hours of completed training in mold remediation and basic mold assessment. |
| Electrical, mechanical, plumbing | Over $10,000 | |
| Asbestos, hazardous waste, lead-based paint abatement or removal, underground storage tanks | One dollar or more | There is no small job in these classifications. Any amount of this work requires the license. |
The provision that is worth real money to an MEP contractor
Under R.S. 37:2156.1(H), mechanical, plumbing and electrical contractors licensed by the state are excluded from local, municipal and parish regulatory examination procedures, and may bid and perform work in any local jurisdiction on payment of the applicable fees. The preemption extends to your employees, who cannot be required to sit a local examination or hold a local certification in order to work for you. One state license, every jurisdiction, no local exams. Louisiana also exempts any plumbing contractor holding a Master Plumber License from the State Plumbing Board of Louisiana from the trade examination.
A residential home improvement or mold remediation licensee in good standing for at least one consecutive year may move the license to inactive status, keeping the renewal fees and continuing education but dropping the insurance certificates until reactivation.
What this means if you build in Louisiana
Louisiana is a coverage state, not a bond state, and that changes what matters. The $100,000 general liability requirement and workers compensation are conditions of holding the license, and a lapse is a licensing problem rather than just an insurance problem. Two of Louisiana's eleven classifications, hazardous materials and mold remediation, are exactly the emerging niches we work in, and both carry low or no dollar threshold before a license is required. Where a bond does come into play in Louisiana is on the contract side - performance and payment bonds on public works under R.S. 38:2216 - which is a separate requirement from licensure and the reason to build the financial file properly now.
A license bond is not a contract bond
This is the distinction that costs Louisiana contractors work. A license bond is what the state or the city requires before it will let you operate. It is a fixed amount, it renews annually, and it protects the public. It says nothing about whether you can bond a job.
A performance bond is different. That is job-specific, written at the full contract value, and it is what an owner requires before awarding you the work. Contractors who assume their license bond makes them "bonded" find out otherwise the first time they try to bid public work.
The two are connected in one direction that matters: the financial file that gets you a license bond easily is the same file a surety underwriter reads when you ask for a performance bond. Building it properly now is what makes the bigger bond reachable later. See how contractors qualify for bonds and how a bond program gets built.
A license bond is also not insurance. It does not protect you - if a claim is paid, you reimburse the surety. See surety bonds versus insurance.

Louisiana contractor license bond FAQ
Does Louisiana require a contractor license bond?
No. Louisiana does not require a contractor license bond at all. What the statute actually offers a contractor who cannot document the required net worth is an irrevocable letter of credit, which is a bank instrument, not a surety bond.
How much is a Louisiana contractor license bond?
There is no such thing. Louisiana requires no contractor license bond. If you cannot document the net worth minimum for your classification, the statute lets you file an irrevocable letter of credit for the shortfall, which is a bank instrument rather than a surety bond. Pages quoting you a Louisiana license bond amount are misreading R.S. 37:2156.1.
What insurance does Louisiana require to hold a contractor license?
General liability of at least $100,000 plus workers compensation for residential construction and its subclassifications, mold remediation and home improvement. A liability trust fund under R.S. 22:46(9)(d) at the same $100,000 is accepted in place of a policy.
Is a Louisiana license bond the same as a performance bond?
No. A license bond is a fixed annual requirement to hold your license and it protects the public. A performance bond is job-specific, written at the full contract value, and required by the project owner before award. Holding a license bond does not mean you can bond a job.
Does a Louisiana contractor license bond protect my business?
No. A surety bond protects the party the bond runs to. If a claim is paid on your bond, you reimburse the surety. Liability insurance protects your business; a bond does not.
A note on the details: Bond amounts, licensing thresholds, and filing rules change, and they vary by classification and by the agency issuing the license.
