Auto Insurance - Coverage That Keeps Up With How You Drive
Auto insurance is one of those things most people buy once and forget about. You pick a policy, set up autopay, and hope you never need it. But when you do need it - a serious accident, a hit-and-run in a parking lot, a teen driver's first fender bender - the details matter. What you are covered for, how much, and whether your auto policy actually coordinates with the rest of your insurance program makes a real difference in what comes out of your pocket.
Grit Insurance Group does not just sell you an auto policy. We look at your full household - every driver, every vehicle - and build auto coverage that works with your home, umbrella, and anything else you have. That is how insurance is supposed to work.
What Auto Insurance Actually Covers (and What It Does Not)
A standard auto policy has several moving parts. Here is what each one does:
- Liability (bodily injury and property damage). This pays for injuries and damage you cause to OTHER people in an accident. It is what your state requires you to carry. It does not pay for your own injuries or your own vehicle.
- Collision. Pays to repair or replace YOUR vehicle after a crash - whether you caused it or not. Subject to your deductible.
- Other-than-collision (sometimes called "comprehensive"). Covers damage to your vehicle from theft, weather, vandalism, animal strikes, falling objects, and anything that is not a collision with another vehicle. Also subject to your deductible.
- Uninsured/underinsured motorist (UM/UIM). Pays for your injuries and damages when the other driver has no insurance or not enough. This is one of the most important coverages on your policy.
- Medical payments or PIP. Covers medical bills for you and your passengers after an accident, regardless of who caused it. PIP may also cover lost wages depending on your state.
- Rental reimbursement and roadside assistance. Pays for a rental car while yours is being repaired and covers towing, flat tires, and lockouts.
What auto insurance does NOT cover: Wear and tear, mechanical breakdowns, damage to your personal belongings inside the car (that is your homeowners or renters policy), or business use of a personal vehicle (that requires commercial auto or a hired/non-owned endorsement on your business policy).
How Much Auto Insurance Do You Actually Need?
State minimums exist so you can legally drive. They do not exist to actually protect you.
Utah's minimum liability is 25/65/15 - that is $25,000 per person for bodily injury, $65,000 per accident, and $15,000 for property damage. A single trip to the ER can exceed $25,000. A new truck costs more than $15,000 to replace. If you cause a serious accident at state minimums, the other driver's attorney comes after your personal assets for the rest.
What we recommend for most households:
- $100,000/$300,000 bodily injury liability (minimum - higher if you have assets to protect)
- $100,000 property damage liability
- Matching UM/UIM limits - do not carry less UM than your liability limits
- Collision and other-than-collision on newer vehicles (drop it on older cars when the premium is not worth the payout)
- An umbrella policy on top - $1 million in extra liability for roughly $200-$400 per year
The umbrella is the play most people miss. It extends your liability protection across both your auto AND home policies. It is one of the best values in all of personal insurance.
Auto Insurance as Part of Your Full Program
Auto insurance should not live in a vacuum. When we set up your auto coverage, we look at how it fits with everything else:
- Bundle with home for multi-policy savings. Most carriers offer 10-20% off when you carry home and auto together. That discount alone often pays for better coverage limits.
- Umbrella coordination. Your umbrella policy requires minimum underlying limits on your auto and home. We make sure your auto limits meet the umbrella's requirements so there is no gap in coverage.
- Household-level planning. Teen drivers, multiple vehicles, a spouse's commuter car, a classic car in the garage - we build the program around your full household, not one vehicle at a time.
- High-value and exotic vehicles. If you drive something worth more than a standard carrier wants to insure, our Private Client program places exotic, luxury, and collector vehicles with specialty carriers.
This is why a personal insurance review matters. When someone looks at your auto, home, umbrella, and life together, the whole program gets stronger and usually costs less than buying everything separately.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much does auto insurance cost in Utah?
It depends on your driving record, vehicle, age, credit, and coverage levels. Average full-coverage auto insurance in Utah runs $1,200-$2,000 per year. State minimum-only policies are cheaper but leave you exposed if anything serious happens. We can show you exactly what different coverage levels cost for your specific situation.
Do I need uninsured motorist coverage?
Yes. About 1 in 8 drivers nationally is uninsured. In some states, the number is higher. If an uninsured driver hits you, UM coverage pays for your injuries and damages. Without it, you are on your own - even if the accident was 100% the other driver's fault. We recommend carrying UM/UIM limits that match your liability limits.
Should I bundle my auto and home insurance?
Almost always yes. Multi-policy discounts save 10-20% with most carriers. But the savings are only part of the reason. Having both with one agency means your umbrella policy coordinates with both your auto and home - no gaps between carriers, no finger-pointing at claim time. One agency sees the full picture.
